Matthew van heerden Signature Chardonnay 2022 A Limited Production Of Twelve Barrels Only
About Us
My wines reflect my passion to reflect my country’s unique diversity of vineyard sites in their most natural light. Utmost emphasis on viticulture and sustainable farming methods ensuring exceptional fruit with an elegant style of fruit purity, authentic expression and age ability. Small barrel lot production, wild yeast fermentation and minimal intervention allow my wines to express specific characteristics and provide a quality framework. A limited production allows me a hands on approach and attention to detail from the vineyard to winery.
Tasting Note
“This is one of the best interpretations of the grape in the Cape: subtle, balanced, elegant and refreshing with a hint of stone fruit and flavours of lemon butter and gunflint.” Tim Atkin – Master of Wine
Vineyards/Soil
A selection of unique cool climate sustainably farmed Chardonnay vineyards reflecting my specific goal to showcase South Africa’s exceptional world class Chardonnay Terroir. Predominantly decomposed granite and shale soils.
Harvest stats
Grapes harvested from February until March depending on flavour expression and ripeness in the vineyards.
Vintage & Winemaking Notes
Smallest harvest in the last decade, with fantastic dry conditions which led to vineyards and grapes being very healthy. Smaller bunches with very small berries led to more concentrated flavor and balanced acidity. A natural winemaking approach is followed with the usage of whole bunch pressing followed by fermentation with wild yeasts in barrel with further ageing on the lees for added complexity.
Analysis
Alcohol 13.5%, Residual sugar 1,8g/litre, TA 5,6g/litre, pH 3.3
